Ballads & Bangers: Good Again & Hot Mess

"What makes a song a banger? The most important is the hook, that sticks in your head, after you hear the song just once. In addition it will also have a solid beat, that you can't help but move to. And recognizability is also key."

They sort of represent the opposite bookends of a musical bookshelf: the catchy banger and the smooth ballad. They are the flamboyant, which thrills and the mellow, which triggers feelings. Not always do they catch the broad public's attention. Maybe because the timing just isn't right, maybe because they are deep cuts that not everyone gets to hear or simply because the artist is not well enough known (yet). And although musical tastes always are personal and subjectiv, this spot here shall give those songs a little stage to shine.

In 2018, Ryan Kinder decided to give up Nashville. He left behind a major label contract with Warner Records and a handful of commercially successful singles, including 'Close', which has been streamed almost 41 million times on Spotify to date. Despite this, he was unable to achieve major success in the country genre. "I got to the point that I knew [the label deal] wasn't going towards what I wanted to do, and we should have that conversation of, 'this isn't working anymore'," he said in an interview with forbes.com. "Which was a terrifying thing because most musicians grow up dreaming of a major label deal like I did."

After the split and release of his first independently produced and released album in 2021 ("Room to Dream"), Ryan Kinder began working on a new project last year. For this, he started releasing new songs at regular intervals. Again with his new music he did not impose any stylistic limits on himself.

"Growing up with so many different types of music, I never wanted to pigeonhole myself into one specific genre. I love country but I grew up on soul and blues and folk and I wanted to incorporate that [into my music]."

On June 28, 2024, the ballad 'Good Again' was released, which was written together with Brandon Ray and Cale Dodds. The song tries to come to terms with a breakup and look forward. But at the same time it still lacks the courage to believe that things will ever be this good again.

I know there's always something you wish you could change.
I know there's always someone who don't feel the same.
I know the hardest part is over and I'm doing the best I can.
I know that it gets better but does it ever get good again?

Banger: a popular song or piece of music with a loud, heavy beat (= rhythm) that people like to dance to. (dictionary.cambridge.org)

29-year-old Kendra Remedios from Texas still works as Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). But by now she lives in Nashville and, alongside her job, is passionately devoting herself to building a music career. After releasing her first EP in 2021 ("The Beginning."), she has released 3 new songs this year. Among them is the somewhat autobiographial mid-tempo 'Texas To Tennessee'.

The most recent track was released on July 6, 2024 and is a powerful Southern Rock banger called 'Hot Mess'. Written with Maddie Lenhart and Shelby Raye, the song describes a seductive, yet chaotic woman and the very ambitious, but yet very handmade video tries to convey exactly that.

Breakup and Separation

"Like much of Myers' work, the song is rooted in plainspoken emotion, the kind that feels honest because it doesn't try too hard to impress. No pyrotechnics here. Just a man, his memory, and a beat-up Squier Stratocaster he bought for $100 from a storage unit sale." (songfacts.com, 2025)

No Wine, No Roses

"If I counted correctly, there are four romantic dates nights in and out, which find Green and his onscreen lover ripping the other's clothes off. The entire time I felt like I needed to close my eyes, but I also couldn't look away." (Adison Haager / tasteofcountry.com, Feb 12, 2025)

Years in the making

"I've almost died a couple times, and [since then] I've thought about what my legacy is going to be. I had to ask myself 'Am I going to be known as someone who just kept bailing and giving up or someone who got out of their own damn way and made it happen?'"
