On the July 25th, 2022 Billboard Country Airplay Chart Nate Smith holds the Number 41 position with his first real Radio single after only 6 weeks , with a strong trend upwards. It's called 'Whiskey On You' and Rachel Brodsky of stereogum.com calls it a country-pop crossover banger.
Written by Nate Smith together with Lindsay Rimes and Russell Sutton, it deals with the end of the mourning-phase after a rough realtionship breakup. "I ain't gonna waste another drop of whiskey on you", affirms the singer with the powerful voice in the chorus of the song.
His first two songs ('Raised Up' and 'I Don't Wanna Go to Heaven') for Sony Music Nashville, where he signed his first Major Label contract in the fall of 2021, were vulnerable midtempo-ballads full of gleaming enlightenment. To underscore the importance of the message, there were even 3 different video versions produced for the latter song - the orginal, a Gospel-Choir Version and a duet with the young Canadian Tenille Townes.
With 'Whiskey On You' we finally see the artist from California put the pedal to the metal, showing us a new artistic side of himself. Although the repeat lyrics of 'Line 'em up (Line 'em up), pour 'em tall (Pour 'em tall)' undeniably reminds one of the Morgan Wallen hit 'Whiskey Glasses' from 2018, it is this hook that secures it in our brains - regardless of whether this may eventually result in a copyright case.
Interestingly, the video for 'Whiskey On You' also reminds one of the video for 'Whiskey Glasses', as both start with music made at home, eventually moving to a real concert environment. In the video for Nate Smith the female part is played by TikTok star Katie “Demps” Dempsey, while the concert footage was shot at a by now legendary Whiskey Jam in the parking lot of Loser's Bar in Nashville.
With an astounding 29 Mio. streams on Spotify, 'Whiskey On You' by Nate Smith not only moves towards potentially becoming one of the
unexpected summer hits of the year, but it also scores its first entry on the
Billboard Hot 100 (at 84). All in all this demonstrates more than just
a promising start of a commercial career for
Nate Smith.
