Like white on rice

"We’ve done so many different genres and people for the longest time didn’t know what genre to call us. For once in our career we were like, ‘hey, let’s change that for this record or this timestamp in our career moving forward, let’s be a damn country band’".
(Charlie Muncaster of Muscadine Bloodline / entertainment-focus.com, October 23, 2021)

On February 4th, 2022 independent duo Muscadine Bloodline from Alabama released their current album, the title cut of which is also meant to tell their own story. A story that deals with a hopeful musician coming to Nashville, where all the big labels and publishers have their offices on 16th Avenue. And eventually ending up on the side of town, where the twang used to hang around, instead of signing with a record label, because they all much rather take the dollar sign over an honest song.

It's been almost 7 years now, since Gary Stanton and Charlie Muncaster have come to Nashville as Muscadine Bloodline, hoping for the big break. A goal that is still out there, even with their current album "Dispatch to 16th Ave". A batch of midtempo songs, from which only 2 stick out musically: the atmospheric melancholy of 'No, Pedal Steel, written by the duo together with Dave Cobb and Adam Hood, and the rowdy bluegrass punk of 'Dyin' For a Livin'', which has reached almost 4 Mio. Spotify streams to date. Hence making it the most popular cut on the album.

tasteofcountry.com calls 'Dyin' For a Livin'' quick and dirty and for Muscadine Bloodline it brings a promising new musical option. So promising in fact, that their first official radio single borrows heavily from its style. Titled 'Me On You', it will go to radio on August 29th, 2022. Interestingly enough, it is not included on the current album, but seems to already chart a new chapter with its official July 8 release-date.

It's a song that talks about steamy hot nights - and how to get through the days that keep them apart. Because the guy has hopelessly fallen for her charms and it feels that they belong, like white on rice, like black on night. The track was written with Ryan Youmans, with whom the duo has worked before and who also helped produce.

Well, I know you know you gone and took control of me
And there's nothing that I can do
'Til the break of dawn or the cows come home
I'll be right where you want me to be
And that's me on you.
(Me On You / Gary Stanton, Charlie Muncaster, Ryan Youmans)

Alabama: "The Closer You Get" [Album]

The band Alabama has probably been the most influental musical act in my life and responsible for converting me to country music for good. Their slight rock and pop influences created a whole new vibe for country music and as we know, they were the first (at least successful) self contained country band; meaning they played all their instruments themselves, even during recordings most of the time. At live shows, they were not merely singing like successful groups such as the Oak Ridge Boys or the Statler Brothers had done before them, but as a band they were also playing their own instruments.

Chevrolet

"Louis Chevrolet was born in 1878 as the second of 8 children in French-speaking Switzerland. From Paris, where he worked in a car factory, he emigrated to Canada (Montreal) in 1900. The following year he took a job in New York City before starting to race cars for Fiat. In 1911 he founded the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in Detroit with William Durant (founder of General Motors)." (Wikipedia)

Brantley Gilbert: "Just As I Am" [Album]

Today I received the new Brantley Gilbert CD in the mail. Yes, I am still buying physical CDs! Although the days may be numbered as I now mostly listen to music electronically while on the go - plus files do not take up as much space as physical media. In any case, I was excited and curious what the first full major-label release for Brantley Gilbert would sound like. Commercially it already is one of the most successful albums of 2014 by selling 211,000 copies in its first week and debuting at No.1 on the country albums chart and at No.2 on the pop charts behind the new album by Coldplay. Brantley Gilbert walked into the spotlight kind-of unplanned in 2010, when Jason Aldean recorded two of his songs for his 2010-album, the title track ' My Kinda Party ' and ' Dirt Road Anthem ', respectively going to No.2 and No.1 on the country singles charts. Those hits kick-started Brantley's career into the mainstream and resulted in a reissue of his album ...
