no Versace purse.
I'll take a man with calloused hands
and mud on his spurs.
I know he's out there looking for me,
I just wanna wake up with him under the tree."
Foremost female trio Runaway June is coming back with a new single titled 'Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)'. A song about crazy things one might do out of frustration after a breakup. "Middle fingers up, yeah the hell with love, thats what they're thinking, so they keep on drinking", we hear them sing in the catchy uptempo song, made for commercial country radio. An atmosphere that they also create tongue-in-cheek in the accompanying video to the song.
It is a song that has no involvement of any band member as a songwriter for a change. Yet it is the one pushing a new beginning, which many feared would not happen anymore. After all it is only Jennifer Wayne (granddaughter of famous John Wayne) who has remained of the initial setup of the band when it was formed in 2015.
Only one year after the release of their first full length studio album "Blue Roses" in 2019, Natalie Stovall (of the group Natalie Stovall and the Drive) replaced Hannah Mulholland. At the beginning of 2022 Naomi Cooke also decided to leave and was eventually replaced by Stevie Woodward this fall.
So after their only hit so far -the gold-certified top-10 radio (Billboard Country Airplay) single 'Buy My Own Drinks' from 2018- they are now eager at working on their career as the only
commercially successful female trio in country music. A constellation that has let
some call them the next generation chicks, in reference to the superstar trio
The (Dixie) Chicks from the 1990s.
But since it is that time of the year, Runaway June fittingly have also
come up with new music for the holiday season. This is not only remarkable
because they have just issued an EP with 5 christmas songs 2 years ago,
but most of all, because the new song is an exception to most holiday music
released these days, which shows little creativity, other than re-recording
old classics again and again, in the end only fading in comparison
to the original anyways.
Even though the trio has also recorded 3 classics ('Sleigh Ride', 'O Holy Night' and 'Let It Snow') on their EP "When I Think About Christmas, at least the production sounds fresh and appealing with the clear voices of
the group way up front in the mix. Aside from that, there are also 2 original songs
on the project, the title track of which was co-written by Jennifer Wayne, who
seems to be the most active songwriter of the band.
For the new christmas song the whole trio has contributed to the
tongue-in-cheek 'Cowboy For Christmas, which perfectly matches the American tradition of happy holiday songs. It
actually fits right in with some of those old classics. And by incorporating
one of the song trends of 2022 by putting the word
cowboy in its title, it has all the perfect reasons to be put on a 2022 holiday
playlist!
