Ain't You Sweet

"In college I majored in screenwriting. Everyone in that class... I would love it if they saw this. They were so pretentious. I'm not a big shit talker, but if your dad wasn't a high level executive in LA they wouldn't care to talk to you. My dad was a small business owner and my mom's a school teacher. I didn't fit in."

He is going to turn 27 on May 5, 2023. And he is being considered one of the hidden gems of the Texas Red Dirt music scene. Although he initially comes from California and has spent 4 years in Nashville. A city that earned his respect when he moved there after college graduation and only 6 months in Lubbock, Texas. "I do think the talent level and centralized talent level in Nashville is crazy", he said in an interview with  upstarmusiconline.com. "You have all kinds of musicians, writers, any person you need is within a 20 minute drive in Nashville."

Accordingly,  Palmer Anthony had to admit, that he wasn't quite as ready for Nashville, as he had made himself believe. "I moved so cold turkey it took about 2 years for me to get a grip on things. [But] I learned a lot, became a much better musician, better songwriter."

Working at a golf course, he met producer Jacquire King, famed for his production of 'Sex on Fire' for Kings of Leon, who subsequently became a supporter of the young singer and songwriter.

In November of 2020 he released the nostalgic, self-written song 'Remember Us'. Still without a record deal, Palmer Anthony decided to return to Texas. "I felt like I started my career in Texas. It seemed like I was writing songs [more] aimed toward the Red Dirt scene."

As of that moment he gets invited by artists from the Texas music scene to go on tour with them. And in June of 2022 he self-releases his first studio album, bringing together all previously released songs plus additional new ones. That way the project comprises 11 songs and carries the intriguing title "Western & Roll". Contributing to all cuts as a songwriter, Palmer Anthony presents himself predominantly traditional sounding, with strong elements of Red Dirt - a sonic mixture of primarily country, with minor folk and rock elements. Only on the well done 'Happy for You' a pulsating rock guitar takes the undisputed lead.

At the beginning of the year 'Sleep, My Mind & You', written together with Kasey Tyndall gets released. A hopeless ballad, accompanied by a professionally shot video, about a broken relationship and the realization, that he is not only losing her, but also sleep and his mind.

And you would think by now
I'd have it figured out,
what's driving you away,
why I can't make you stay.

And I'll just toss and turn
just waiting for the words,
and wondering what the hell I'm gonna do,
I'm losin' sleep, my mind, and you.
(Sleep, My Mind & You / Kasey Tyndall, Palmer Anthony)

On April 14, 2023 Palmer Anthony hints at a new musical perspective, slightly off the traditional sounds he mainly has shown so far, via the mid-tempo song 'Ain't You Sweet'. Only the theme is still one about the darker side of life, when he warns the girl to get involved with him, 'cause the liquor is my best friend:

Run, don't walk,
baby don't stop,
'til you hit that county line.
[But] ain't you sweet little darling
and pass me the salt and lime.
(Ain't You Sweet / Palmer Anthony)

It is a little surprising, that a talent like Palmer Anthony still is without a record deal. After all he seems to own all the traits of success. But supposedly this is not going to remain so for long. All that's left to decide then would be the question, whether he still sees his musical future in Texas or whether he might consider going back to Nashville, hence stepping up on the national stage. After all, the recent successes of artists like Cody Johnson or Parker McCollum go to prove, that Texas and Nashville no longer need to exlude each other.
