I can feel it

"I wrote [this song] after my wife left me. Genesis had done a tour that was far too long. ...  I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I’m not quite sure what the song is about, but there’s a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration. ... Nobody knows what the song is about, and I kind of like the mystery."

On February 13, 1981, the drummer of the British rock band Genesis, founded in 1967, released his first solo album entitled "Face Value". It followed the first single, which had been released around 4 weeks earlier and which remains perhaps the most memorable one of Phil Collins' long career. Not least because of the striking drum sequence, which Collins himself described with a smile as the sound of barking seals.

And although the song 'In the Air Tonight' only reached number 2 on the charts in Phil Collins' home country of Great Britain and didn't even get above number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, it is considered one of the most extraordinary ones of the last 40 years. In 1984, it appeared in the first episode of probably the world's most successful television series of the 1980s - Miami Vice. In 2000, Eminem incorporated a reference to it in his own song 'Stan' and in 2020, a YouTube Review ensured that 'In the Air Tonight' climbed to number 3 on the Billboard Digital Song Sales chart for the first time.

In the fall of 2023, US sports network ESPN made the track their theme song for their weekly broadcast of Monday Night Football. None other than Snoop Dogg, Chris Stapleton and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana (wife of famed Carlos Santana) were brought together to underline the drama in sports with perfectly cut video scenes and the song by Phil Collins.

Around the same time, on September 21st, Kane Brown released his latest single. It is the harbinger of an upcoming new album and it also has connections to Phil Collins' hit. Not just because of the title 'I Can Feel It' (and an original line of lyrics), but foremost because of the use of that famous drum sequence, which, unlike in the original, gets placed at the very beginning of the new song.

"We were in the green room after a show in Toronto listening to our favorite songs", Kane Brown told iheart.com about the song's origin. "Someone played Phil Collins' 'In the Air Tonight' and it inspired us so much that the next day we wrote 'I Can Feel It'."

Even though a joint appearance at the Stagecoach Festival did not happen, Phil Collins gave his consent to the interpolation of 'In the Air Tonight' on the current Kane Brown single 'I Can Feel It'. Therefore, alongside Kane Brown, Jaxson Free and Gabe Foust, Phil Collins is listed as one of the songwriters for the song. "Phil [Collins] could have said no", Kane Brown said with relief at countrynow.com. "So I'm glad that he let me use the song."

For the video supporting the song, renowned video director Alex Alvga was hired to create a story around the track. A story that revolves around a note that simply reads: "1/4 mile race. You win $100,000. I win your shop ... one week."

While the lyrics of the song are just about passionate love, video director Alex Alvga turns them into a passion for motorsports. And therefore Kane Brown, in his role as the owner of a small workshop, takes on the challenge of either losing his business or winning a lot of money in a car race.

"We spent a total of 6 hours filming just the racing scenes", director Alex Alvga said about the shoot. "During the racing scenes, we encountered a challenge where the two cars kept overheating due to the need for multiple takes to capture the scene effectively. [So] we had to take a 20-minute break to allow the cars to cool down and function properly again."

In any case, the end result, with its 2.2 million views on YouTube to date, probably contributes a little to the fact that 'I Can Feel It' already sits at number 10 on the radio (Billboard Country Airplay) charts of January 26, 202, haing reached the vital top-10.
